Twin Bosch 044 and Twin HKS In tank – Fuel System

RB26 Engine BayLast time the car was in the capable hands of TDI in Lakeside, they were investigating why the Skyline was not able to reach 2 Bar on wide open throttle. Typically in street mode on the 20′s the car runs at 1.5 Bar, which is around 600BHP. This is more than enough for everyday driving and I will always run out of road before running out of power.

On the occasion I’m on drag strip I switch the HKS EVC (Boost Controller) to “Mode B” which I call Apeshit mode, the car turns into a complete animal. 1.5 Bar is a lot of power, but at 2Bar the sheer power is enough to snap your neck back so fast it causes blood to rush to the back of your head and makes you feel light headed.

The GTR was really struggling to reach 2 bar, I was encountering what I describe as “Turbo Shuffle” – which is the Turbo attempting to reach full power but not quite able to coming on and off..

After further investigation TDI’s rang me up and told me that my car was not able to reach 2 bar due to lack of fuel. Despite my Swoosh fuel guage saying there was plenty of fuel pressure the reading on the gauge was inaccurate. So all three are being binned or sold on eBay shortly. Teaches me a lesson to buy cheaper gauges. I’m going to buy the DEFI gauges – at first I couldn’t justify the £200 ish for each gauge but considering how important things like Fuel Pressure, Exhaust Gas Tempreture and Air/Fuel mixture is, it’s worth the investment.

So first the problem, lack of fuel – I currently have two intank HKS Fuel pumps, running down the standard fuel lines via fuel filters to either side of the fuel rail.

In this setup I utilised the existing fuel lines and added a new low pressure fuel return which goes straight back into the tank next to the fuel pump pickups.
The entire system was built in haste as I wanted to get the car ready for JapShow and it was at that point I achieved my first 10 second run. So now its 2010 and I have a bit more time on my hands I’m looking at upgrading the fuel system to include two Bosch 044 fuel pumps and a swirl pot to ensure there is plenty of fuel.

Parts Ordered:

  • 2 x Bosch 044 Fuel Pumps
  • 2 x Bosch 044 Fuel Pump brackets
  • 1 x 2.5 Litre Fuel Swirl Pot
  • 2 x Fuel Pump Relays

I ordered two Bosch 044 Fuel pumps from Cam Auto Developments (Thanks for the Haribo Cheryl!)
I ordered the two Bosch 044 Fuel Pump brackets from Torques UK
I ordered the 2.5 litre Fuel Swirl Pot from Demon Motorsport

Each Bosch 044 Fuel Pump is capable of supporting up to 700BHP, so running both with the HKS lift pump should future proof my car.

I’ve had all of the above delivered, just need to mount it all in my boot and then get all the hosing made up! More to follow…
