So TeamGTR religiously go to Japshow and Ultimate Street Car at Santa Pod Raceway. Not without glitches due to mechanical error, but we always attend. This year we decided we'd try something different and go to AwesomeFest 2011. So it was agreed, we'd show up in our Team GTR Skyline R33 GTR, RMS drag civic, Stiggy Evans LS1 Powered (drift) Lexus, Black Pearl (aka our Silvia S14a), wkd_El's Seat Leon Cupra R, Evo 6 - Tommi Makinen edition and the GT Bitz R32 GTR.
Well over £100k worth of motors, so we're on the phone to Kam @ Driftwoks are we're told we can't camp with our cars. To our dis-belief another team member rang and they confirmed, we'd have to leave our cars in the middle of a field about 45 mins away from where we camp. Sorry but are you f'ing kidding right? At least £100k worth of motors, left alone in a field with a lot of drunk, Class A taking people wondering around, a few weeks back a drift car was stolen, so surely they should understand people are a little bit more concerned when it comes to car security. Plus the track was open to RWD cars only, so no point bringing our 800bhp+ GTR even though it would have been a real crowd pleaser.
Driftworks official response to the parking situation was "we park our cars in multi-story car parks, and there is a risk of getting them stolen" not really a reassuring answer Driftworks.
So plans fell apart, we spoke to Santa Pod, who do let us camp with our cars, and orgasined the crew to be at USC in 2011. A couple of the team members had already booked Awesome Fest weekend off, so we decided a few of us would go. Turns out we could camp with our cars! So our plans fell apart for no reason. We even spoke to traders and they were told they'd have to park away from their stands.
Driftworks really got it wrong, I guess around 2,000 people, which is dwarfed by USC with 12,000+. Driftworks closed the track on Saturday, even the main guy from Sky Insurance didn't get a passenger ride, we kept getting fobbed off, come back later etc when we asked.
So Driftworks 10/10 for effort for organising the event, msuic was good, drinks were reasonably priced. It would have been a great weekend, 0/10 for f'ing people around when it comes to parking and camping - hopefully next year they'll learn from their mistakes and let people park with their pride an joys, it's half the fun going around to different camping areas talking to other car owners. WTF were Driftworks they thinking!
